What are Height Abnormalities? – Reasons and Treatment of Height Abnormalities

Normal height that is socially accepted is much admired by people. If a person is reasonably tall, then many compliment him or her. Being short is generally a negative attribute.

Despite these laid down guidelines about being tall or short, there are some people who are abnormally tall or short. This is referred to as either dwarfism (abnormally short) and gigantism (abnormally tall). These are mostly pathological.

Dwarfism is a condition whereby person does not grow tall and remains of very, very short stature. He or she can lead a normal life. Many of them get decent education, marry and undertake work. They are also intelligent.

Gigantism refers to being abnormally too tall. This happens due to the excessive secretion of hormones that determine physical growth.

Reasons For Abnormality in Height
Hormones play an important role in determining one’s height. Any abnormality in the functioning of hormones can lead to either dwarfism or gigantism.

Genetics also play an important role in determining one’s height. Abnormally tall or short people can have abnormal short or tall offspring.

Chromosomes effect height. Abnormal chromosome formation during pregnancy can result in height abnormalities.

Treatment for Height Abnormalities:
One can undergo growth hormone deficiency treatment, by the injection of growth hormone in its pure form into the thick tissues in order to promote growth.

Socially, one would like to be within the range that society has laid down for being tall or short. Anything, more or less can be an hindrance physically and socially. Yet, those with such physical abnormalities are also leading normal lives.
