Sweeteners for Diabetics

Posted on September 12, 2009 in Diabetes Remedies

Sugar is generally not advisable for diabetics. Diabetes is a disease whereby pancreas does not convert sugar into energy and the excessive sugar flows through the urine. Obviously, the intake of sugar has to be restricted. What about taste?

A diabetic may find it difficult to take sugarless tea and coffee. He or she may prefer something sweet. After all taste buds do matter. What is the option left to him? How about artificial sweeteners?

Artificial sweeteners are made up of rice, wheat, potatoes, corn, barley etc.

Types of sweeteners diabetics can have?
Several artificial sweeteners are available in the local market such as Saccharin, Acesulfame Potassium, Aspartame, D-Tagatose, Sucralose, etc. A diabetic can have desserts sweetened by artificial sweeteners as well as their tea and coffee.

Are artificial sweetener’s safe?
Artificial sweeteners are FDA approved. Despite this they are considered to be unsafe for diabetics. They are chemical in nature. Diabetics are always on medication as well as chemical management. None of the sweeteners mentioned are safe for diabetics. They have side-effects. They are marketed because they sell as substitutes for sugar for diabetics and weight-watchers. They make the diabetics feel that they can eat whatever they so desire by using artificial sweeteners.

These sweeteners may be substitutes for sugar but are harmful in the long run. Of course one has natural sweeteners to try out.

Types of sweeteners
Sugar, honey and brown sugar are simple carbohydrates which the pancreas is unable to convert into energy. These remain in the blood and cause the blood sugar level to go up.

One can try complex carbohydrates in the form of malted whole grain sweeteners such as barley, rice, brown rice and malt syrup. These cereal malt syrups are safe to take.

The brown rice or rice malt syrup is rich Vitamin B and minerals. The rice malt syrup is slightly flavored for taste.

A diabetic can also have taste of sugar by using artificial sweeteners. Of course, it is better perhaps to avoid any kind of sweetening products be it sugar or artificial sweeteners. There could be side-effects in the long run.
