Those suffering from Diabetes are at a risk of Alzheimer disease and memory loss, particularly American suffering from Diabetes according to earlier studies conducted. Memory decline is linked up with a hormone known as corticosterone. It is quite similar in nature to the stress hormone produced in humans known as cortisol.
According to findings of a new study conducted by National Institute of Health on rodents suffering from Diabetes, the increase in the level of corticosterone disrupts the hippocampus, the area of the brain which is responsible for short-term memory and learning. The adrenal gland produces the hormone.
When the researchers injected drugs into the rodents in order to reduce the stress of the hormone levels, the hippocampus was able to recover its “plasticity” and the ability to build new cells and provide compensation to injury as well as disease.
How does Diabetes affect the brain?
- Improper control of blood sugar level, on account of hormone insulin not being produced to convert sugar into energy, affects the brain.
- Diabetes cause damage to many blood vessels located in various parts of the body. The blood vessels in the brain also get affected.
- Type 2 Diabetes is common among people of the older age group who are overweight. Diabetes as mentioned earlier can increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. By changing one’s lifestyle by exercising and taking heart friendly diet then one can prevent the onset of Type 2 Diabetes and the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Of course, it does not imply that Diabetics will develop Alzheimer as they age, but that Diabetes can increase the risk of Alzheimer. Many people who suffer from the disease do not have Diabetes.
Remedial measures for Diabetic memory loss
- Changes in diet by having foods such as lean meats, vegetables, fish, vegetables, fruit, legumes, whole grain foods, low fat dairy foods. The brain needs proper nutrition. One must have more protein, calcium and fiber.
- Plenty of exercise to improve blood circulation.
- The blood sugar levels must be controlled properly in order to prevent premature memory loss.
- Memory improves as it is used more. A diabetic not only has to stay physically well but also be mentally alert. He or she can keep the mind active by doing crossword puzzles. The brain has to be exercised and stimulated.
