Scurvy is identified by dark gums and loose teeth. It is generally observed in people whose diet happens to be low in green leafy vegetables and fresh fruits. Symptoms experienced are bleeding gums, wounds not getting healed quickly, joint pains, liver spots as well as general weakness of the body. Those who spend much of their time away from mainland (on sea), infants who have improper vitamin C diet or babies who are weaned for mother’s milk are prone to this disease.
Home Remedies for Scurvy
Some of the top and effective scurvy home remedies are:
- Take the extract of lemon and mix it with 1 teaspoonful of honey. Place the mix in a glass of warm water and have it twice in a day.
- Mix Indian gooseberry powder with sugar in same amounts. Take 1 teaspoonful of the powder with a glass of milk every night before bedtime. It helps in recovering from scurvy faster.
- Eat the fruit of Indian gooseberry as it is very beneficial in treatment of scurvy. Take about 4 fruits per day at different times.
- Include foods that contain Vitamin C such as sweet lemon, oranges, grapefruits, cantaloupes, tomatoes as well as green leafy vegetables in one’s diet.
- In about 500 ml of water boil few leaves of jaundice berry. Let it boil till the decoction is reduced to about one-third. Have it in a dosage of 2 to 4 ml on a daily basis.
- Amachur, that is powdered mango powder is also very good. In one glass add about ½ teaspoonful of the powder.
- For infant give cow’s milk combined with breast milk.
- Fresh air as well as sunshine is very good in treating Vitamin C deficiency. Spend your time in nature.
- Potatoes are also good for scurvy. A 100 gms of potato contains about 17 mg of Vitamin C.
- Vegetables such as green pepper, broccoli, cabbage etc. are very good.
Scurvy can be treated with easily available home remedies but it is better to consult a doctor and seek timely medical help. Home remedies for scurvy could be taken with traditional medicine for fast recovery.
