Hair Loss Basics

Posted on February 18, 2006 in Skin & Hair Remedies

Hair loss is a condition that affects both men and women, as they grow older into middle age. But it becomes a problem when there is excessive hair loss and turning bald when they are yet in their youth. There is no vaccine for hair loss, but a regimen of care and proper nutrition can slow down hair loss considerably. But first, one has to change the mindset of people who think that hair loss is due to sweating, stress, dirt or using headgear like hats.

First let us examine the dynamics of hair growth. Hair grows even when we are in the womb and grows faster during and after puberty. A natural hormone that is called DHT works towards hair growth. Along with Androgen Receptors, DHT controls, regulates and feeds the hair growth. Hair loss occurs when three-four months earlier the patient has had major surgery or delivered a baby, or when the body reacts to certain medicines, infections like dandruff, and due to underlying diseases like diabetes, lupus, psoriasis and so on. Hair loss can also occur due to shock, or poisoning.

Hair loss affects people in various ways and with different intensities as well. For men, it manifests as common baldness or as the doctor would say male-pattern baldness, receding hairline at forehead and temples, thinning of air at the scalp. Of course, when you find that after ‘resting’ each time, your hair grows thinner and shorter before stopping completely, you have the condition called hair loss.

Inflammation is also a cause for rampant hair loss. The sensations that one feels as an auto immune response to an inflamed condition of the scalp are the tingling, the itchy sensations, and the rapid falling off of hair follicles.

To emphasize the proper care for one’s hair, we must have the correct information to go about hair care in a proper way. Here is no point in just counting the hair that one is losing or still having. We can choose a better option of going in for proper hair treatment. Doctors may advise medications like DHT inhibitors, minodoxodil sold under the brand names of Propecia, Proscar and Rogaine, which are approved by the FDA. These treatments have shown good results in clinical studies, but the results may vary in your case. In case you are suffering from severe hair loss, you can obtain relief by taking supplements, which have not yet been approved by the FDA. Some of the promised treatments for hair loss could turn out to be just a waste of time and money.
