Home remedies for dehydration

Dehydration means, excess loss of water from the body. Water constitutes 50 - 60% of our body weight. It is one of the most important constituents of our body and most neglected one too.

Mild, moderate and severe are 3 types of dehydration. In mild dehydration body loses 5% of its fluid. Once the loss of body fluid reaches 10%, it is moderate dehydration. Medical attention is required in the case of moderate dehydration. Once the loss of body fluid reaches 15%, it is severe dehydration. The affected person should be hospitalized immediately.

In summers one could have lot of sweating which is very normal as by it body maintains its temperature. Only precautions that could prevent any type of dehydration is to replace lost fluid by drinking lot of water regularly. Make it a point to take a minimum of 3 liters of water daily.

Symptoms for mild dehydration:

  1. Flushed face
  2. Dry and warm skin
  3. Dizziness
  4. High level of thirst
  5. Reduced urination
  6. Easily irritable
  7. Headache
  8. Dry tongue
  9. Weakness
Home remedies for dehydration:
  1. Stop all your activity and take rest in cool place
  2. Prop up your feet
  3. Do not expose your self to direct sunlight in any case.
  4. Continue to drink lot of water for next 24 hours.
  5. Take rehydration drinks like juice or plain water.
  6. Take off extra clothes and wear something comfortable and light.
  7. Avoid cold drinks as they aggravates dehydration as they contain caffeine.
  8. Avoid tea coffee completely.
  9. Take fruits like water melon and cucumber as they have high percentage of water.
  10. Avoid fried foods.
  11. Raw vegetable and fruit have high percentage of water. Include them in your regular diet to prevent future dehydration.
